A portrait artist based in the Black Country. My work consists of following
my neurodivergent younger sister to witness her day-to-day life,
identifying her struggles with anxiety while trying to show her personality
of the bubbly and loud individual I get the privilege to see everyday when
she is in her safe space. My aim is for the audience to see Angel's
personality shine, allowing Angel who have a metaphorical voice through
these fine art pieces.
I have been inspired by artist Caroline Walker and who captures glimpses
of shop workers or closely observed portrayal of her mother. Unravelling
the psychology of women in their daily lives. Following this I have taken
multiple candid images of Angel to identify the emotional and mental side
of her doing daily tasks.
Angel is my participant and my inspiration in this project, she has the
influence over what I paint and what she would like the audience to see.
She has been involved in the creative process by producing charcoal
drawings alongside me, by choosing the background colour as the colour
symbolises different feelings to her.
Together we have built a connection I have learnt so much more about
how and what she goes through, her physical and emotional well being. By
creating journal entries, I have had the honour of reading every thought
and feeling that she has.
The reason for this project is I have always admired my younger sister, to
me she is funny, unique and overall, an amazing person.
"This dissertation will look into the idea of art, and can it help alleviate anxiety and depression? Mental health is now a huge crisis for the NHS due to the decline in mental wellbeing that many people suffer with on a daily basis ranging from mild anxiety to behavioural abnormalities. Anxiety is an extreme fear and worry which is retaliated to disturbances in behaviour causing the individual severe distress resulting in the person being unable to function. However, depression is a low mood that can last for months, the feeling of depression affects the sufferer's daily life where they no longer find satisfaction in things that they used to enjoy. Treatments for anxiety and depression are usually cognitive behavioural therapy, thoughts feelings and behaviours are linked. Therefore, a negative thought leads to a negative emotion which creates a negative behaviour. This is a vicious cycle that CBT tries to break and correct those negative thoughts and feelings to breakdown and evaluate the situations differently, improving the patients' wellbeing. Uncovering why CBT is not always ideal as it can be too complex for people with learning difficulties for example individuals who suffer with autism. So, what can help? The dissertation will uncover how art could be a potential candidate in helping people who suffer with anxiety and depression when they are unable to fully communicate the emotions which are too difficult to talk on.
